The sweeties went camping...
Two weekends ago Kyle and I went camping together for the first time. It was a late anniversary celebration. We canoed over to new castle and camped there for one night. It brought back memories of my fist time camping there which was with Dad and the twins in October of grade 6. We rarely did things with just dad and it was fun. Anyway. Getting over there was a bit stressful because we had to have everything ready to go before the family potluck we had that night for Layne and his boys. Our main problem was that we had nothing to sleep on and werent really in a place to be able to go and buy an air matress or anything. Plus Im not sure how I feel about air matresses. They seem rather unreliable to me. We finally got Leah's permission to take the foamie that had been sitting in their carport since who knows when. I asked Evan to bring it to the potluck. Well we left the potluck early all ready to go. It wasnt until we got to the boat launch that I realized we forgot to get it from them. So Kyle offered to set things up in the canoe while I drove back and got the foamie. All the way back to piper's lagoon I went. I looked in the truck. There was no foamie there. Evan forgot it and insists that he told me that before (which he DIDNT and if he did- I did not hear him). This greatly annoyed me. In situations like this I get more stressed out than need be. I hate that I cant just calmly go about things as if it didnt matter. However, if I had known they forgot it, it wasnt that far from the boat launch to their house. It would have taken me a couple of minutes. It just sort of seemed like Evan didnt care at all. I started thinking "Great, now we're going to be setting up camp in the dark! Is that just something I cant avoid because Im a Clarke? Is it my lot in life that camping will never happen smoothly??" I picked up the foamie and it was so gross. It smelled like cat. Ann suggested putting it under the tent and thats what we did. We were so desperate and I wanted it to be a good sleep because I didnt have to wake up with Adriel in the morning and I wanted to take full advantage of that.
Once we set off it was quite nice. The water was in it's glassy stage and it wasnt getting too dark yet. Kyle and I argued back and forth (playfully) about his steering skills. At first we zig-zagged a little, and he blamed it on me. Acted as if he was doing all the work. Didnt see why I should be able to switch sides whenever I felt like it. I explained that the person steering is supposed to pay attention and make it work no matter what I did. As we got closer I said- "you're finally getting the hang of steering" and he said "YOUR'E finally getting the hand of it" classic Kyle come back. Just repeats what I say to him back to me, blah blah blah blah.
By the time we got set up it was dark. It wasnt dark while we were setting up which was nice, and also because i had come over earlier in the day to set up our tent. Kyle went through the forest to find firewood. A lady drove up on her quad thing and told us we had to buy it because they didnt want us to disturb nature. So we did. We later noted that she was the one disturbing nature driving loudly through the dark with her bright light while there were at least five deer in the field across form where we were camping. It was rather bizarre actually. They wandered out there at dusk and then just stood still in the dark. Is that how they sleep?
Kyle impressed me with his fire making skills. We sat and drank pop and ate a few snacks in front of the fire and just talked. It was nice. We went for a very brief walk along the beach and looked for stars. There werent many. He gets easily bored as you all know, so we went back to the tent and read for a while and went to bed.
Sleeping in didnt happen. It was too bright and loud with the birds chirpping and such. We lazed around in the morning reading and eating trail mix. We made our own trail mix. We went and bought all the stuff we wanted to put in it in bulk and just mixed it together. It was probably half chocolate and half nuts but it was good. I personally feel that they dont put enough chocolate in the already made ones.We went for walks and explored the island. Did you know there's a little lake thing there? I didnt. It was covered in lily pads and you couldnt really get very close it to it. But its there and we walked to it. For lunch we canoed over to the dingy dock pub on Protection. That was fun. I got blackened halibut in a sandwich which was very good and Kyle got fish and chips- also good. We shared and then we had to of course get sex in a dingy for dessert and it was delicious.
After we got back Kyle said he didnt want to go swimming. I was a little disappointed. It wasnt the nicest of days but it was warm and muggy. I didnt want to go by myself though. We went back to our campsite and Kyle read while I had a nap.
After that we packed up and went home. Just in time for it to rain too. It was nice to do that together. Just so you all know, I have been working on this post for a few weeks. I'll do a little and then have to get off so I save it and do more next time, etc until its done. What can I say? Im busy and when Adriel is entertained or sleeping there's other less fun things I need to do, like clean, or get things organized for primary... I know there's no excuse. Everyone's busy.
